Arctic Monkeys Cover The Strokes

Tranquility Hotel and Casino begins with the words, “I just wanted to be one of The Strokes.” It is common knowledge that Arctic Monkeys, and Alex Turner in particular, are self confessed fanboys of the famous American band. Now, we have firm evidence.

Last night, with a new haircut, Turner led a reworked version of The Strokes’ ‘Is This It’ as the Sheffield band returned to the States after a string of festival appearances throughout Europe. Performing in Queens, New York, it was perhaps fitting that this new cover was debuted just miles from The Strokes famous East Village home.

“I just wanted to be one of The Strokes.”

Having already covered Elvis Costello on their current tour in support of the now chart topping Tranquility Hotel and Casino, Arctic Monkeys are no strangers to unique covers. With Girls Aloud, Drake and David Bowie already receiving the ‘Turner’ treatment, their rendition of ‘Is This It’ is just another figment in their ever growing back catalogue.

Speaking the NME in 2011 Turner said, “I remember consciously trying not to sound like The Strokes, deliberately taking bits out of songs that sounded too much like them, but I still loved that album.”
